Did you know that after the initial investment in brew kits and the like, home brewed beer can cost as little as $.28 per pint?  Well, apparently, lots of other people do know this.  And they’re making the investment.  Home brewing is booming right now as a result of the current global recession.  People see that the price they pay for beer will be lower.  Also, many people are spending more time at home as a result of the financial crisis.

Some owners of beer brewing supplies stores are seeing their best year ever in sales.  In an article which recently appeared in the Leicester Mercury, one such business owner is interviewed:

“Anne Saunders runs Matchless Home Brewing Company, in Belvoir Road, Coalville.

She said: ‘In the past three weeks or so we have had a lot of new brewers in buying equipment. Lots of people are asking advice or starting up again, having given up years ago. Last year was awful. I was turning grey with worry because it was very quiet, but this is much better. I think it’s the recession. People still want to have a drink and cigarette and they can do so at home. You don’t get grumpy people who make their own beer.”

Another business owner commented on the recent advances of brew kits,

“…advances in technology mean flat-tasting home brews were a thing of the past – but others said it was difficult to get the perfect product.”

Most new brewers start with a brew kit.  The price for a brew kit ranges from $30 – $80.
